Push back pallet rack system is a type of high-density storage solution which allows pallets to be stored 2-6 pallets deep. It follows the principle of LIFO and improves storage density at the expense of reducing selectivity.

Push back pallet rack is composed of an inclined rail and a series of nested carts on which pallets are placed. The first stored pallet will be placed on the top cart, the second pallet will be put on the second cart, and so on. But it should be noted that the last stored pallet will be directly laid on the rail, which means the number of carts is one less that the number of pallets in a lane.

Maintenance: Its requirements for maintenance are not high, but there is a special component, namely the cart, which plays an important role in the system. therefore, besides regular checks, extra careful inspection of carts is necessary.

How does push-back pallet rack work?

When it is time to load pallet, forklift operator will place the first pallet on the top cart in the lane. When the second pallet is loaded, the second pallet will push the first pallet forward one position and sits on the second if in a 3-6 deep system or sits directly on the rail if in a two deep system. This process continues until the lane is full.

When it is time to unload pallet, the forklift operator lifts the outermost pallet off and reverses slowly, and then the next pallet will comes forward and into the front position. This operation repeats until the lane is empty.

How to select the right depth of push back rack:

Normally, push back rack is 2 to 6 deep. In order to make the best use of push back system, it is advised that the number of the same SKU is at least 4-5 times the depth of the storage lane. For example, if you use 2 deep push-back pallet racks, then there should be at least 8-10 pallets of the same SKU in your facility.

Likewise, for 6 deep push-back pallet racks, you should have SKU with 24-30 pallets. Usually, the warehouse will be designed to combine different depths of push-back racks to take full advantage of the limited floor space.
