Double deep pallet racking is a derivative of selective pallet racking, the double-deep system requires the use of a specialist forklift truck or an attachment mounted on a forklift truck. Features of Double Deep Pallet Racking System:

• Double-deep racking stores two pallets deep in a single-entry rack or four pallets deep in a double-entry rack.

• This system requires the use of special reach trucks with double pantographs or sliding fork attachments.

• Double-deep racking increases storage density with fewer aisles and more storage positions. This reduces the aisle-to-shelf ratio but also reduces selectivity (FIFO).

• The height of the truck lift is limited by the load, approximately 9 meters.

• The upper level can be fitted with front and rear rails to help the operator position and place the pallets at the right height. The bottom beam must be sufficiently far from the floor to allow the forklift legs to pass underneath.

Double deep pallet racking is the first step in increasing the density of a storage system and as the cost per pallet position is close to that of selective racking, the density is affordable. With the assistance of some quality planning and or warehouse management systems, most facilities are able to manage an average fill rate of close to 85%.
