Description
How to Replace a Fuel Pump in a Jeep Grand Cherokee
BY EDITORIAL TEAM
The Jeep Grand Cherokee has an electric fuel pump so you should
ensure that its fuses and relays are working before checking it.
You may need to clean your fuel pump or replace it if your gas tank
is not empty, but your vehicle has difficulty getting fuel. The
Jeep Grand Cherokee comes in a variety of styles and trim levels
that can affect the replacement fuel pump you choose.
STEP 1
Determine which fuel pump your Jeep Grand Cherokee will need. This
depends not only on the make and model, but also the engine size.
Models made from 1999 to 2004 may be equipped with a 2.7 L OM647,
3.1 L 531, 4.0 L PowerTech, or 4.7 L PowerTech engine. Models made
after 2004 can have a 3.0 L OM642, 3.7 L PowerTech, 4.7 L
PowerTech, 5.7 L Hemi or 6.1 L Hemi.
STEP 2
Position your vehicle over a hoist and relieve the fuel system
pressure. Raise your vehicle and drain the tank by loosening the
clamp and removing the fill hose.
STEP 3
Unplug the fuel pump's electrical connection and disconnect the
evaporative emissions lines and the fuel lines. Support the fuel
tank with a hydraulic jack and remove the bolts on the fuel tank so
you can lower the fuel tank.
STEP 4
Remove the lock ring on the fuel pump using tool 9340 with a ½ inch
drive breaker bar to rotate the lock ring counter-clockwise. The
fuel pump should rise up slightly when you remove the lock ring.
Remove the fuel pump using care not to bend the float arm.
STEP 5
Install the new fuel pump using the items included in the kit,
especially the rubber gasket for the fuel tank. Rotate the fuel
pump until the alignment arrow points toward the alignment mark. Be
sure the fitting on top of the fuel pump faces towards the driver's
side. Tighten the lock ring with tool 9340 until all seven notches
engage.
STEP 6
Complete the installation by reversing the removal procedure.
