Thermal Management PCM Can Absorb Heat And Improve The Stability
And Performance Of The Device
Composition and structure:
- PCM usually consists of a host material and additives. The host
material is a key part of the phase transition, which can occur at
around 20°C, e.g. from a solid to a liquid state or from a liquid
to a solid state (depending on the properties of the material
itself).
- Additives may be used to improve the properties of materials, such
as increasing thermal conductivity and stability. Its
microstructure changes during phase transitions, such as from an
ordered crystal structure in a solid state to a relatively
disordered molecular arrangement in a liquid state.
Performance characteristics:
1. The latent heat of phase change is large
- When the temperature reaches around 20°C, PCM absorbs or releases a
large amount of latent heat. During the phase change, the
temperature of the material can remain largely stable over a
relatively narrow range, which is important for precise thermal
management.
- For example, when the ambient temperature rises to close to 20°C,
the PCM begins to absorb heat and change from a solid state to a
liquid state, which can effectively delay the further rise of the
ambient temperature.
2. Good thermal stability
- It can maintain relatively stable performance during multiple phase
change cycles, and will not have obvious performance degradation
due to frequent phase transitions. This allows it to be effectively
managed over a long period of time.
3. Adjustability
- By changing the composition and proportion of the material, the
phase change temperature can be adjusted within a certain range to
meet the specific needs of 20°C thermal management in different
application scenarios.
- At the same time, it can also be improved by adding different
additives to its thermal conductivity, flame retardancy and other
properties.
4. Adaptability to volume changes
- During the phase change, although the volume change of the material
will occur, this change is generally within the acceptable range
and can be accommodated by suitable packaging, etc., without
causing damage to the equipment or system to which it is applied.
Fields of application:
1. Thermal management of electronic equipment
- In electronic devices such as smartphones and tablets, some parts
generate heat when working, and when the temperature is close to
20°C, PCM can absorb heat and prevent the device from overheating,
thereby improving the stability and performance of the device.
- For example, when the battery heats up, the PCM absorbs the heat
and keeps the battery temperature within the appropriate range to
prolong battery life.
2. Building energy saving
- Can be added to building materials such as wall panels, ceilings,
etc. When the indoor temperature is close to 20°C, PCM absorbs or
releases heat through phase change, which plays a role in
regulating the indoor temperature and reducing the energy
consumption of air conditioners and other equipment.
- In winter, it can absorb heat such as solar energy during the day
and store it, and release it at night when the temperature drops,
keeping the room warm.
3. Cold chain logistics
- When transporting temperature-sensitive goods (such as vaccines,
food, etc.), the phase change characteristics of PCM are used to
maintain the relative stability of the environment in which the
goods are located at about 20°C.
- When the ambient temperature rises, the PCM absorbs heat and
prevents the goods from deteriorating; When the temperature drops,
the PCM releases heat to ensure the quality and safety of the
goods.
4. Utilization of solar energy
- In equipment such as solar water heaters, PCM can absorb solar heat
during the day and store it, and when the water temperature drops
to close to 20°C (such as when the water temperature drops at
night), the PCM releases heat to improve the supply stability and
energy efficiency of hot water.
