PNP sensors produce a positive output to your industrial controls input, while NPN sensors produce a negative signal during an “on” state. ... NPN, or “sinking” output sensors, work in the opposite way, sinking ground voltage to an input when it's on.
● Is PNP better than NPN?
For the U.S. market, standardizing on PNP sensors would be the
better option as they are more popular and easier to find than
their NPN counterparts. PNP sensors are also easier to understand
and troubleshoot by technicians, since the sensor will give a
high-level voltage signal when the output is active.
● How do I know if my sensor is PNP or NPN?
Power on the system and carefully measure the voltage between 0V
and the black wire. If there is a voltage of +24V when the sensor
is active, it is a PNP-type sensor. If there is a 0V reading on the
multimeter when the sensor is active, it is most likely an NPN
sensor.
