SAEF Technology SFEPD154B-7099A-BWY is an Active Matrix Electrophoretic Display(AM EPD), with interface and a reference system design. The 1.54” active area contains 200x200 pixels, and has 2-bit full display capabilities. The module is a TFT-array driving electrophoretic display, with integrated circuits including gate buffer, source buffer, SPI interface, timing control logic, oscillator, DC-DC, SRAM, LUT, VCOM. Module can be used in portable electronic devices, such as Electronic Shelf Label (ESL) System.

Operating Temperature

The operation temp is -0-50C, storage temp is -20-60C. 90 %RH Max. (Ta ≦ 40 ºC), where Ta is ambient temperature.

Wet-bulb temperature should be 39 ºC Max. (Ta > 40 ºC).No condensation and no frost in absolute ratings of Environment.

The temperature of panel display surface area should be 0 ºC Min. and 50ºC Max. Refresh time depends on operating temperature.
E-Ink Material is Moisture and UV sensitive. The absolute rating operating environments describes the boundary conditions for updating the display while the absolute rating storage environment describe the boundary conditions for a display not updating. While displays are rated to perform according to specification for the warranty period at the absolute specified operating environment, the better the storage condition, the better the E Ink displays will perform. Similar to other moisture and UV sensitive components, we recommend that our displays be stored in temperature and humidity control environments, and whenever possible, under above defined Optimal Storage Condition, away from sunlight, to optimize their performance.

The e-ink screen has paper-like characteristics, which can achieve eye protection, energy saving, bending and other effects

At present, the mainstream display technologies include: electrophoresis display technology (EPD), cholesterol liquid crystal display technology (Ch-LCD), bistable directional liquid crystal technology (Bi-TNLCD), etc. Among them, electrophoretic display technology (EPD) is the underlying technology of electronic ink technology (E ink), and the mainstream e-paper in the market at this stage adopts electrophoretic display technology.

The e-ink screen uses e-ink and is equipped with electrophoretic display technology, which can present the visual effect of traditional paper, and can usually transmit data with wireless protocols such as WIFI, BT/2.4G, 4G/5G, UWB, Zigbee, NFC, RFID/UHF, etc., so it is widely used in IoT scenarios such as smart education, smart office, smart logistics, and smart medical care.


Electronic Paper Displays (EPDs) are usually composed of anti-glare glass, front light source, touch, e-ink film, TFT backplane, controller, power manager, etc. E-ink films are typically made up of millions of microcapsules. The microcapsules contain black and white particles with positive and negative charges, which can move accordingly according to the change of the electric field, making a specific block appear black or white, forming a corresponding pixel pattern.


In addition to the traditional black and white, there are also color ink screens suitable for various scenarios such as price tags, office, advertising, and notes, including black, white, red/yellow (price tags), black, white, red and yellow (office/price tags), N-color 7 colors (office/advertising), printed color 4096 colors (notes) and ACeP full color (advertising).

Compared with common LCD and OLED displays, the e-ink screen basically has no problems of screen flickering and blue light due to its paper-like characteristics, which alleviates the dizziness and fatigue caused by long-term reading; And because of its characteristics of no power consumption in static screen display, it can meet the needs of energy saving and long battery life. However, due to the fact that there is still a large gap between the refresh speed and color richness of the e-ink screen compared with LCD and OLED, the presentation effect of dynamic and color images is poor.

According to ePaper Insight, the development of the e-paper industry has gone through five periods:

►Reader growth period (2008-2011): In 2007, Amazon launched the Kindle e-paper book reader, which led to the development of the global e-ink screen market, and the sales volume of a single reader category exceeded 100% from 2008 to 2011.

►Global Decline Period (2012-2014): The global e-paper market showed a cliff-like decline, with shipments falling below 10 million units in 2014 due to the diversion of some reader demand after the launch of the iPad and the lack of major development of other application scenarios.

►Industrial recovery period (2015-2019): As the cost of electronic ink screens continues to decline, downstream application scenarios are gradually opened. According to EPIA data, the average annual sales volume of ESLs from 2015 to 2017 was 20 million, but in 2018 the sales volume exceeded 50 million pieces. In addition, electronic ink screens have also been fully penetrated in the fields of transportation, medical care, education and industry.

►Rapid growth period (2020-present): The global outbreak of the new crown epidemic in 2020 has driven the demand for remote learning and office, and the shipment volume of the e-paper market has reached a record high. With the deepening of the global concept of environmental protection and energy conservation, the shipment volume of ESL market will continue to reach a new high in 2021. At the same time, with the release of e-ink screen displays by brands such as Hisense and Lenovo, we expect the industry to usher in rapid growth with the advantages of eye protection and energy saving.
