The name of the segment liquid crystal originated in the early days when the liquid crystal screen began to be applied, mainly to replace the LED digital tube (composed of 7 pen segments, used to display the number 0 ~ 9), such as calculators, clocks, etc., the display content is digital, but also relatively simple, now, the general non-dot matrix liquid crystal display is called the segment LCD.

In contrast to the array of pixels of the lattice liquid crystal, the pixels of the segmented liquid crystal are very free in arrangement and shape. The most common is the "8" field similar to a digital tube, and an "8" character is composed of 7 segments, that is, 7 pixels. The "m" glyph "8" consists of 16 pixels. Of course, the segment of the segment liquid crystal can be made into any shape, as long as the driving ability of the driver chip is allowed. For example, company logo, other patterns, text, etc.
Made of liquid crystal material, the price is low. The driving cost of segmented liquid crystal is also very low, and the classic HT1621 series chip is a good choice. HT1621 can drive 32×4=128 pen segments, which is equivalent to 16 "8" characters. The interface of HT1621 is serial, with CS, WR, RD (RD can also be omitted), and DATA pins. The HT1621 can also drive a buzzer to emit a sound of high and low frequencies.

How it works
TN type LCD screens usually have three modes: full translucent, transflective and reflective. The liquid crystal does not actively emit light and needs to be connected to provide an external light source. The light source of the fully transparent liquid crystal comes from behind the liquid crystal; The light source of the reflective liquid crystal comes from the front of the liquid crystal and is reflected to the observer's eye by the polarizer of the liquid crystal screen; Transflective liquid crystals fall somewhere in between, with both light coming from behind the liquid crystal and light reflected from the front. Therefore, a backlight is required for fully transmissive liquid crystals, no backlight is required for reflectivity, and semi-translucent liquid crystals can be used with or without a backlight. LCD screens that do not use a backlight cannot be observed in the dark.
