INTENDED USE
The Viral Transport Medium is intended for the collection and
transport of clinical samples containing viruses, chlamydiae, mycoplasmas and ureaplasmas
from the collection site to the testing laboratory.
For professional in vitro diagnostic use only.
SUMMARY
Proper specimen collection and transport plays a critical role in
laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases associated with viruses,
chlamydiae, mycoplasmas and ureaplasmas.
Viral Transport Medium is suitable for collection and transport of
clinical samples containing viruses, chlamydiae, mycoplasmas and ureaplasmas. The
system is offered with a plastic, stand up tube with screw cap filled with
universal transport medium, and with/without flocked swabs.
Viral Transport Medium is stable at room temperature and consists
of a balanced buffer solution to maintain neutral pH, antimicrobial agents, a
source of protein, and cryoprotectant to preserves the infectious organisms for
long-term frozen storage.
PRINCIPLE
The Viral Transport Medium is made of Hanks Balanced Salt Solution
and contains a protective protein antibiotic to control microbial contamination
and buffers to control the pH. Phenol red is used as a pH indicator. The medium
also contains a cryoprotectant which helps in preserving the viruses if specimens
are frozen for prolonged storage.
COMPONENTS
The Viral Transport Medium consists of Hanks Balanced Salt
Solution, fetal bovine serum, antibiotic, antifungal, amino acid, HEPES and
cryoprotectant.
PRECAUTIONS AND WARNINGS
1. To be used by trained and qualified professionals.
2. Read the information in this package insert and follow
directions carefully.
3. Follow standard microbiological aseptic techniques.
4. There is always a potential for the presence of blood borne
viruses including human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis viruses in the
specimens. Special precautions should be taken when handling specimens that may have
come in contact with blood and other bodily fluids. Follow state, local and
institutional guidelines for the handling and disposition of this and all
biohazard waste.
5. This product is not intended to be used for the collection and
transport of general bacterial and fungal specimens. Carefully read and follow
the instructions outlined in the package insert.
6. Do not re-pack.
7. Do not bend flocked swab prior to specimen collection.
8. Do not sample patients after wetting swabs with transport
medium.
9. Do not use if the package is damaged or broken.
10.Do not use if the medium is contaminated (medium change color
from pink to yellow or turn turbid).

[Sample Requirements]
The collected nasopharyngeal swab samples should be transported at
2°C-8°C and submitted for inspection immediately. Sample transport
and storage time should be no later than 48h.
[Testing method]
1. Before sampling, mark the relevant sample information on the
label of the sampling tube.
2. Use a sampling swab to sample at the nasopharynx up to different
sampling requirements.
3. Sampling methods are below:
a. Nasal swab: Gently insert the swab head into the nasal condyle
of the nasal passage, stay for a while and then slowly turn it out.
Wipe the other nostril with another swab, immerse the swab head in
the sampling solution, and discard the tail.
b. Pharyngeal swab: Wipe the bilateral pharyngeal tonsils and
posterior pharyngeal wall with the swab, immerse the swab head in
the sampling solution, and discard the tail.
4. Quickly place the swab into the sampling tube.
5. Break the sampling swab above the sampling tube, and tighten the
tube cap.
6. Freshly collected clinical specimens should be delivered to the
laboratory within 2 hours at 2°C-8°C.
[Interpretation of results]
If the collected sampling solution turns yellow or turbid, the sample should be re-sampled for testing.
[Method limitations]
1. Contaminated samples after collection will affect the final results.
2. Store samples at inappropriate temperature will affect the final results.
