A 1xN multimode PLC splitter is a type of optical splitter that is
designed to divide a single optical signal into multiple output
signals. The "1xN" notation refers to the fact that there is one
input port and N output ports, where N can be any number. Multimode
PLC splitters are typically used in fiber optic communication
networks to distribute optical signals from a central location to
multiple endpoints.
The acronym "PLC" stands for Planar Lightwave Circuit, which refers
to the manufacturing process used to create the splitter. PLC
splitters are made by etching a silica glass substrate with a
pattern of waveguides that divide the incoming signal into the
desired number of output signals. The waveguides are arranged in a
planar circuit, hence the name "planar lightwave circuit".
Multimode PLC splitters are designed to work with multimode fiber
optic cables, which have a larger core diameter than single-mode
fibers. They are typically used in shorter distance, high-bandwidth
applications such as data centers, local area networks (LANs), and
multimedia distribution systems. The most common configurations for
multimode PLC splitters are 1x2, 1x4, 1x8, and 1x16, but higher
port counts are also available.
