The three cone drill bit is a core rock breaking equipment in the exploration and development of oil, natural gas, and mineral resources. It is named after the three rotatable "cones" installed at the bottom of the drill bit. The core principle is to break the hard rock into small pieces through the rolling and squeezing of the roller cone, and then use drilling fluid to carry the rock debris out of the wellbore, achieving continuous progress of drilling operations. As a representative of traditional drilling tools, it is still an important choice for deep well and hard rock drilling due to its advantages of "adaptability to complex formations, strong durability, and controllable cost".

In addition, there are some large-sized three cone drill bits, such as 26 inches (660 mm), 36 inches (914.4 mm), etc., mainly used for some special large-scale engineering or oil drilling projects.
Classification: Divided by "geological adaptability" and "structural design"
Three cone drill bits need to be designed according to the
"formation type (soft rock/hard rock)" and "drilling depth
(shallow/deep well)" of the drilling. The common classifications
are as follows:
1. Classify according to the shape of the roller teeth (core
distinguishing formation hardness)
Steel toothed three cone drill bit: The surface of the cone is
directly milled with steel teeth, which is low-cost and has good
toughness. It is suitable for soft rock medium soft rock formations
(such as clay rock, mudstone, and loose sandstone). However, steel
teeth have weak wear resistance and are prone to wear in hard rock
formations, resulting in a shorter lifespan.
Three cone drill bit with embedded teeth: "Hard alloy teeth" (such
as tungsten carbide alloy) are embedded in the groove of the roller
teeth, with a hardness much higher than that of steel teeth
(Rockwell hardness HRC ≥ 85), strong wear resistance and impact
resistance, suitable for medium hard rock hard rock formations
(such as limestone, granite, basalt). Currently, over 80% of deep
well and mining drilling uses this type of drill bit.
2. Classify by seal and bearing type (distinguish operating
environment)
Ordinary sealed three cone drill bit: using rubber seals, suitable
for shallow wells, low-pressure, low-speed operations (such as
geological exploration shallow wells), with low cost, but limited
sealing performance, unable to withstand the high temperature and
pressure of deep wells.
Metal sealed three cone drill bit: using a metal to metal sealing
structure (such as copper alloy sealing ring), lubricated with
grease, can withstand high temperatures above 300 ℃ and pressures
above 100MPa, suitable for deep wells, ultra deep wells, and
high-pressure oil and gas wells, with a lifespan extended by 20%
-50% compared to ordinary sealing models.
