Why do some ultrasound examinations require holding back urine? How much is appropriate to hold in?​

Before conducting urinary system examinations such as bladder, ureter, and prostate, as well as gynecological ultrasound examinations in unmarried women, patients with heavy vaginal bleeding, and patients in the first three months of pregnancy, it is necessary to hold back urine and fill the bladder appropriately to reduce intestinal gas interference and provide good Acoustic window. For gynecological ultrasound, the bladder urine volume is required to be 300-400ml. As far as experience is concerned, drinking 500-800ml of water before the examination generally requires holding in urine for 2 hours, and drinking 800-1000ml of water requires holding in urine for about 1 hour. A good sign of a full bladder is that the lower abdomen bulges in a shallow arc when lying down, and can be pressed down and held back when pressure is applied.
