Spring pins may be used to retain a shaft as a journal in a plain bearing, as a type of key to fasten one shaft to another, or to precisely fasten flat faces of mating parts together through symmetric hole locations.

Due to the chamfered end, the pins can be inserted easily into the hole with a hammer or using automatic placement. After insertion, the plus tolerance of the pins results in a vibration-proof seating.
The pins can be easily removed using a mandrel and reused several times.

Steel pins are strong and wear resistant. Pins with a black-phosphate or zinc-plated finish have an outer layer to protect the steel underneath from rust.420 stainless steel pins are as strong and wear resistant as steel, with the addition of corrosion resistance in wet environments.
