Nihon Kohden ECG machines generally use direct thermal printing technology, featuring the following features:

- No ink cartridges or ribbons required: The print head directly heats the thermal paper, developing color.

- Wearable parts: The print head is a consumable part, and its lifespan depends primarily on the number of pages printed. With use, the heating element degrades, resulting in reduced print quality.

When the printhead needs cleaning or replacement, the following symptoms may occur:

- Blank or completely black print: This may indicate a complete printhead failure or a faulty wiring harness.

- Faint or intermittent print/waveform: This is the most common symptom and indicates aging or contamination of the printhead's heating element.

- White horizontal lines appear on the printed paper: This indicates a malfunctioning thermal pad.

- Black vertical lines appear on the printed paper: This indicates permanent scratches or carbonized dirt on the printhead surface.

- Partially discolored print paper: This indicates uneven heating of the printhead.

Installation Steps:

1. Turn off the EKG machine and unplug the power cord.

2. Open the paper cover and remove the paper roll.

3. Carefully lift or remove the old print head according to the instructions in the manual (usually with a release lever or screw).

4. Use a cotton swab lightly dampened with anhydrous alcohol to gently wipe the thermal dots (the long, thin, light-colored strips) on the ceramic plate of the print head.

5. Wait for the alcohol to evaporate completely (approximately 1-2 minutes).

6. Reinstall the print head, load thermal paper, and perform a test print.
