The working principle of the US Probe is that when a sound source emits sound waves at a fixed frequency and propagates within an organ, reflection occurs at the interface. If the interface moves relative to the sound source, the frequency of the reflected sound waves is different from that of the incident sound waves. When the interface moves towards the sound source, the frequency of the reflected sound waves increases; When the interface moves away from the sound source, the frequency of the reflected sound wave decreases, and this phenomenon is called the Doppler effect of ultrasound.
When the Doppler effect occurs, there is a difference between the frequency of the received sound wave and the frequency of the emitted sound wave, called the Doppler shift, represented by ƒ D. In the formula, ƒ 0 is the frequency of ultrasound, C is the propagation speed of ultrasound in the organ, and V is the velocity of interface movement.
For the fetal heart that we are concerned about, when using 1MHz ultrasound as the sound source, the corresponding frequency shift ƒ D is around 60-400Hz. We first demodulate, amplify, and then filter the received ultrasound signal (the typical frequency of the filter is set to 60-400Hz), resulting in the fetal heart Doppler frequency shift signal.
