PRL Overview
Prolactin is a polypeptide hormone called prolactin (PRL), one of
the hormones secreted by the pituitary gland. It promotes the
proliferation of mammary glands, the generation and discharge of
breast milk, but also participate in a variety of bodily functions,
especially the regulation of reproductive function. The
determination of PRL concentration is helpful for the diagnosis of
sagittal pituitary dysfunction. Pituitary tumors sometimes cause
impotence in men. Elevated PRL is often associated with galactoplex
and amenorrhea, and a decrease in PRL after medication may lead to
a return to normal menstruation.

PRL Clinical Significance
- For patients with amenorrhea, infertility, and menstrual disorders,
PRL should be tested during lactation to rule out
hyperprolactinemia.
- If the PRL is abnormally high, pituitary prolactinoma should be
considered and additional testing is required.
- Increased PRL levels are also seen in precocious puberty, primary
hypothyroidism, early ovarian function, hypoluteal function, organ
breastfeeding, neuropsychiatric stimulation, and the effects of
certain drugs.
- Factors such as chlorpromazine, birth control pills, large amounts
of estrogen and hypertension drugs can lead to an increase in PRL.
PRL reduction is more common in pituitary depression and prolactin
deficiency.
