Evaporation & Crystallization — MVR Evaporator for Unsaturated Sodium Chloride Solution

Engineer-to-order MVR (Mechanical Vapor Recompression) evaporator and crystallization line designed to concentrate unsaturated NaCl solutions to the crystallization zone and produce controlled sodium chloride crystals. Recompressing secondary vapor as the heating medium delivers low OPEX, stable supersaturation, and consistent product quality.

Key Benefits
  • Energy efficiency: Latent heat is recycled via mechanical compression, minimizing fresh steam use.
  • Crystal quality: Precise control of supersaturation, residence time, and nucleation for narrow PSD.
  • Stable operation: Vacuum duty with tight ΔT/LMTD control limits scaling and foaming.
  • Flexible integration: Works with brine make-up/purification, centrifugation, drying, and sizing.
  • Durable materials: SS316L/duplex wetted parts; Ti/Hastelloy options for corrosive impurities.
Process & Thermal Economy

Unsaturated brine is purified and concentrated under vacuum. The MVR compressor raises vapor temperature, which is reused as the primary heat source. Controlled circulation and seeding bring the liquor into the metastable region, enabling predictable NaCl crystallization at low specific energy consumption.

Materials & Hygiene

Wetted parts in SS316L/duplex; drainable layouts and CIP-ready design. Optional food-contact finishes and documentation for edible salt production.

Process Overview — Unsaturated NaCl to Crystals
  • Brine polish: softening (Ca/Mg removal), clarification/filtration, polishing to reduce insolubles.
  • MVR evaporation (vacuum): compressor discharge sets ΔT; shell pressure defines boiling point.
  • Crystallization: seeded growth; slurry density and residence time govern PSD and clarity.
  • Solid–liquid separation: peeler/pusher centrifuge; mother liquor recycle.
  • Drying & sizing: fluid-bed/vibratory drying; sieving/polishing; optional iodization/anti-caking.
Key Components
  • MVR evaporator (falling film / forced circulation) with vapor–liquid separator
  • Mechanical vapor compressor (turbo/Roots) with VFD for ΔT/capacity control
  • Crystallizer (DTB/OSLO or FC) with seed/feed systems and slurry density control
  • Brine purification skid; condensers; vacuum/NCG handling
  • PLC/HMI/SCADA; instruments (T/P/flow/cond/level); CIP skid
Performance & Sizing
ParameterTypical Target / Range*
NaCl purity (dry)≥ 99.2% (up to 99.7% with enhanced purification)
Moisture (final)≤ 0.2% (grade-dependent)
Crystal size bandsFine 0.2–0.5 mm; Table 0.5–1.2 mm; Coarse 1.2–2.5 mm
Electric use (MVR)~15–40 kWh per ton H₂O evaporated (duty/CR dependent)
Fresh steam demandVery low after start-up (backup/ancillary only)
Campaign length≥ 10–20 days between CIP (feed-dependent)

*Performance depends on feed composition, scaling tendency, compression ratio, and exchanger/crystallizer design.

FAQ
Can the system accept variable brine strength?

Yes—recipes adjust ΔT, circulation, and seeding to stabilize supersaturation and crystal quality despite feed drift.

How is scaling managed?

Proper softening, optimized LMTD/velocity, anti-scale dosing, and scheduled CIP maintain heat-transfer coefficients.

Is food-grade compliance available?

We provide SS316L/duplex construction, drainable hygienic layouts, and documentation to support HACCP/ISO programs.
