Do I need drilled or slotted rotors?
Brake Rotor Styles Explained
There are lots of options when it comes to selecting new Brake Rotors. Once you know if they’re Solid or Vented, the next questions is “What Style?”

Brake rotors come in several styles designed to handle Brake Fade in different ways.

Solid Surface

Solid Surface Brake Rotors can be called “smooth” or “blank” rotors. They provide the most surface area to create friction with the pads. They are strong and durable. That’s why most new cars use them.

Solid surface rotors can also be used for moderate track use. However, your brakes will fade if they get too hot.

Slotted

Slotted Brake Rotors are an upgrade over smooth rotors. They have grooves machined across the face. Slotted rotors are the choice for most performance brake systems.

During heavy braking, fade becomes more likely. The slots allow excess dust and gases to escape. This keeps the pad in contact with the rotor and increases friction. The edge of the slot can also cut into the pad for even more “bite.”

Slotted rotors can improve braking performance. However, they increase pad wear.

Cross-Drilled
Cross-Drilled Brake Rotors are a holdover from the old days of racing. They have holes drilled through the face. Today, they are usually chosen for looks.

Originally, drilled rotors were used to vent the dust and gas created by the brake pads. They also helped to cool the brakes down. However, they are prone to cracking if they get too hot.

For street use, drilled rotors work fine. They probably won’t ever get hot enough to crack. In wet conditions, the holes give water somewhere to go. This can improve initial bite. However, drilled rotors are not recommended for serious racing use.
