Lightning protector is used to protect various electrical equipment
in the power system from lightning overvoltage, operating
overvoltage, frequency transient overvoltage impact and damage to
an electrical appliance. The main types of lightning arresters are
protection gaps, valve-type lightning arresters and zinc oxide
lightning arresters. Protection gaps are mainly used to limit
atmospheric overvoltage and are generally used to protect incoming
sections of distribution systems, lines and substations. Valve type
lightning arresters and zinc oxide lightning arresters are used for
substation and power plant protection, and are mainly used to limit
atmospheric overvoltage in 500KV and below systems, and will also
be used to limit internal overvoltage or as backup protection for
internal overvoltage in ultra-high voltage systems. [2]
