4 Phase Power Supply Substation for Electrical Grid Systems and for Highway
Product Description
Components
• Transformers are the key equipment that converts between voltage levels. Different types are used based on power requirements.
• Circuit breakers like oil, vacuum, and SF6 breakers are used for fast isolation and protection. They have interrupting and short-circuit ratings that match system faults.
• Switches like disconnect switches and load-break switches are used to isolate lines for maintenance.
• Surge arresters reduce overvoltages from lightning, switching, and faults. They divert excess voltage to ground.
• Current transformers and potential transformers are used for metering, protection and control. They provide isolated low voltage outputs.
Design consideration
• Layout - Components are arranged to optimize space usage, accessibility, future expansion, and segregation by voltage class.
• Cooling - Adequate ventilation, heat sinks and cooling systems are provided based on ambient conditions and equipment heat loads.
• Grounding - A low impedance grounding system is used to limit hazardous voltages under fault conditions.
• Insulation - Components are insulated based on the highest system voltage plus adequate safety margins.
• Control - Substations often use remote terminal units to facilitate SCADA control and monitoring over long distances.
• Security - Perimeter security, monitoring systems and personnel access restrictions enhance physical security.
Layouts
• Indoor substations have all equipment housed in a building for protection from weather. They require foundations, walls and roofs.
• Outdoor substations have equipment installed directly in the open air. They require less civil works but are exposed to weather.
• Modular/factory-built substations are assembled from prefabricated modules or containers that are transported and installed on-site.
• GIS (gas insulated switchgear) substations utilize SF6 gas as an insulating medium instead of air. They have a compact footprint.
