A Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor measures the intake manifold pressure. It is typically found on the intake manifold, near or on the throttle body, and sends this data to the Engine Contol Unit (ECU). With this, the ECU is able to determine the correct air-fuel mixture, engine load, fuel injection pulse, and adjust ignition timing accordingly.
MAP sensors are also used to diagnose potential throttle issues, check for a potential vacuum leak on the intake manifold, and converted into air mass data using engine speed and Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor data. For vehicles that feature a Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF), Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensors are a backup to monitor the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve.
Common causes of a Pressure Sensor failure can vary, but can be generally categorized as either contamination, clogging, and/or due to excessive heat or vibration damage. Symptoms of a failing Pressure Sensor are noticable, and include but are not limited to engine not starting or starting poorly, misfiring, poor fuel consumption, lack of engine power, and Check Engine Light illumination.
