The ASME B16.11 half coupling is a forged fitting primarily used for connecting small-bore screwed (THD) or socket-weld (SW) pipe to the large-bore main run pipe (header). SW half couplings are available in Class 3000, 6000 and 9000. It usually has larger overall length than SW full coupling counterpart. Threaded half couplings are available in Class 3000 and 6000. Its overall length is half of the threaded full coupling counterpart. Both construction and function of a half coupling are different from that of a full coupling. Only one end is furnished with either socket welding or internally threaded structure. There are two common methods used to make branch connections with half couplings: (1) The half coupling rests on the external surface of the pipe header and is welded from the outside. (2) A hole is bored into the pipe header large enough to accept the OD of the half coupling. The half coupling is inserted into the hole and is then welded.
