Magnesium precision manufacturing services for custom small and
large components
All About Magnesium in Manufacturing
Magnesium alloys, whether cast or forged, offer excellent
strength-to-weight ratios. They are useful for a wide range of
engineering efforts.
It is 70 percent lighter than stainless steel and 33 percent
lighter than aluminum. These alloys are cost-effective, highly
machinable, and
have the highest damping capacity among structural metals. Their
applications include: automotive, aerospace, electronics, defense,
biomedical, manufacturing, and green energy technologies.
Magnesium is a lightweight metal with high level of machinability
that can be CNC machined to create parts with high strength and
excellent corrosion resistance.
Magnesium Machining Benefits
Magnesium have low density but high strength and good rigidity.
Such performance is very advantageous for the design of the
integral component.
2.Magnesium has good toughness and strong shock absorption. It is
very suitable for parts that are subject to impact—wheels;
magnesium alloys have high damping capacity and are ideal materials
for avoiding fatigue caused by vibration and noise.
3.Magnesium alloy has low heat capacity, fast solidification speed
and good die casting performance. Due to the low heat capacity of
the magnesium alloy, the production efficiency is 40% to 50% higher
than that of the same aluminum alloy casting, and the casting size
is more stable, the precision is higher, and the surface finish is
better.
4.Magnesium alloys have excellent machinability; magnesium are the
materials that are easier to machining in all common metals. High
cutting speed and inexpensive cutting tools for low tool
consumption

Magnesium AZ31B Alloy |
Magnesium AZ31B alloy is lightweight and has high machinability. It
is often anodized to improve its corrosion resistance. It is an
alternative to aluminum alloys due to its high strength-to-weight
ratio and is widely available compared to other magnesium grades.
|
Magnesium AZ91D Alloy |
Magnesium AZ91D cast alloy is a high-purity alloy that has
excellent corrosion resistance, excellent castability, and good
strength. It is the most commonly used magnesium die casting alloy.
|
Magnesium WE43 Alloy |
Magnesium Elektron WE43 is a high-strength casting alloy that can
be used in temperatures of up to 300°C (572°F). This alloy boasts
good mechanical properties coupled with excellent corrosion
resistance.
|
Magnesium AM60B Alloy |
Magnesium AM60B cast alloy is known for its excellent ductility,
superior energy-absorbing properties, and good strength and
castability.
|
Magnesium ZK60A Alloy |
Magnesium ZK60A is machinable but flammable. Lubricants and fire
kits are essential during machining. It's popular in aircraft parts
such as brake housings, landing gear, and instrument bodies.
|
Magnesium QE22A Alloy |
Magnesium QE22A-T6 alloy is a casting alloy with excellent tensile,
fatigue, and creep properties at both elevated and room
temperatures. It is weldable and pressure-tight.

Features of magnesium alloy parts
CNC machining magnesium parts have high strength, the ratio of
strength to quality of magnesium alloy is high, and it has a
certain bearing capacity.
Magnesium parts have small elastic modulus, good rigidity, strong
shock resistance, and are not easily deformed after long-term use.
Magnesium machining parts have good resistance to electromagnetic
interference and shielding.
Magnesium machining parts do not pollute the environment.
The Characteristics of Magnesium Parts Can be as follows:

How to safely machine magnesium?
Although it might sound daunting, it is perfectly safe to CNC
machine magnesium if the right precautions are taken.
Avoid tight clearance angles
Although magnesium can be machined at fast speeds without
compromising the quality of the part,
it is best to avoid tight clearance angles, because contact between
the tool and workpiece increases friction and cutting temperature.
Maintain proper tool condition
Sharp cutting tools can reduce the fire hazard of machining
magnesium.
Dull tools can rub and cause friction, which causes sparks and
builds up heat where the sensitive magnesium chips
are being created. Needless to say, sharp tools will also produce
better parts.
Most machinists use a carbide cutting tool with a large relief
angle for machining magnesium.
Avoid water-based coolant
Although coolants reduce machining temperatures, a water-based
coolant can actually increase the risk of a magnesium fire
as it will produce hydrogen gas.Avoid coolant altogether, or use a
light mineral oil in place of standard coolant. Compressed air
or argon gas can also be used to reduce temperatures without the
risk of exacerbating a potential fire.
