Functional safety/PL level assessment certification for power tools

On May 15, 2020, the German National Technical Safety Committee
Center ZLS updated the EK9-BE-91 (V3) previously released on March
9. This revision further clarifies the requirements of GS
certification for battery charging systems (BMS). In response to
the functional safety requirements of the new version of the EK9
resolution, a one-stop functional safety solution is provided for
power tool companies to help products pass smoothly into the
international market!

On May 15, 2020, the German National Technical Safety Committee
Center ZLS updated the EK9-BE-91 (V3) previously released on March
9.
This revision further clarifies the requirements of GS
certification for battery charging systems (BMS).
Scope of application of the new resolution: battery-powered power tools, garden tools and other mechanical products marked with the GS mark under the Machinery Directive.
The new version of the EK9 resolution proposes the following for lithium battery-driven power tools, garden tools and other mechanical products:
"BMS must have the detection and protection functions for the three parameters of the battery cell (battery cell temperature, battery cell voltage, battery cell current), and the reliability performance level of these three key safety functions must meet PLr = c. The relevant hardware is evaluated according to EN ISO 13849-1, and the relevant software is evaluated according to Annex H of EN 60730-1, and the software level is required to reach Class B."
