Ferrosilicon is an iron alloy composed of iron and silicon. Ferrosilicon is an iron-silica alloy made by smelting with an electric furnace with coke, steel chips and quartz (or silica) as raw materials. Since silicon and oxygen are easy to synthesize into silicon dioxide, silicon iron is often used as a deoxidizer in steelmaking. Meanwhile, a large amount of heat is released when SiO2 is generated, which is beneficial to improve the temperature of molten steel at the same time of deoxidation. At the same time, silicon iron can also be used as an alloying element additive, widely used in low alloy structural steel, spring steel, bearing steel, heat resistant steel and electrical silicon steel. Silicon iron is commonly used as a reducing agent in iron alloy production and chemical industry.

The chemical affinity between silicon and oxygen is very large. Therefore, silicon iron is a strong deoxidizing agent for steel making for precipitation and diffusion deoxidation. A certain amount of silicon can significantly improve the strength, hardness and elasticity of the steel. Therefore, when smelting structural steel (containing 0.40-1.75% silicon), tool steel (containing 0.30-1.8% silicon), spring steel (containing 0.40-2.8% silicon) and silicon steel for transformer (containing 2.81-4.8% silicon), silicon iron is also used as an alloying agent. At the same time, improving the form of inclusions and reducing the content of gas elements in molten steel is an effective new technology to improve the quality of steel, reduce costs and save iron. It is especially suitable for deoxidation of continuous casting molten steel. Practice has proved that silicon iron not only meets deoxidation requirements of steelmaking, but also has desulfurization performance, large ratio, strong penetration and other advantages.
