Quilting knitted fabric can be a bit challenging due to the stretchy nature of the material, but with the right techniques, it can be done successfully. Here are some tips and steps to help you quilt knitted fabric:

Steps:

  1. Prepare Your Fabric:

    • Wash and Dry: Pre-wash your knitted fabric to prevent shrinkage and remove any finishes that might affect sewing.

    • Stabilize: Consider using a stabilizer to reduce stretch. You can use a lightweight fusible interfacing or a spray stabilizer.

  2. Cutting:

    • Lay Flat: Lay your knitted fabric flat on a cutting mat.

    • Measure and Cut: Use a ruler and rotary cutter to cut your fabric to the desired size. Be careful not to stretch the fabric while cutting.

  3. Layering:

    • Backing Fabric: If you are using a backing fabric, lay it right side down.

    • Batting: Place the batting on top of the backing fabric.

    • Knitted Fabric: Lay your knitted fabric on top of the batting, right side up.

    • Pin or Clip: Use quilting pins or clips to secure the layers together. Be gentle to avoid stretching the knitted fabric.

  4. Quilting:

    • Walking Foot: Attach a walking foot to your sewing machine. This helps to feed the layers evenly and prevents stretching.

    • Thread: Use a quilting thread that matches or complements your fabric.

    • Stitch Length: Set your machine to a longer stitch length (around 3.0 mm) to accommodate the stretch of the fabric.

    • Quilting Design: Choose a simple quilting design. Straight lines or gentle curves work best. Avoid intricate patterns that might cause the fabric to stretch unevenly.

    • Sew Slowly: Sew slowly and carefully, guiding the fabric gently to prevent stretching. You can also use a basting stitch to temporarily hold the layers together before quilting.

  5. Finishing:

    • Trim Excess: Trim any excess batting and backing fabric.

    • Binding: If desired, add binding to the edges of your quilt. Use a stretchy binding or bias tape to accommodate the stretch of the knitted fabric.

    • Press: Press your quilt gently with an iron on a low setting, using a pressing cloth to protect the knitted fabric.
