How To Replace Upholstery Springs?

Upholstery springs are probably not what you think. Instead of the old-fashioned vertical coils that you might

imagine them to be, upholstery springs are flat, coiled steel wires that run horizontally across the seat. The

snake-like sidewinder coils of the spring open and close to provide the cushioning effect. Over time, this type

of spring loses tension, causing the seat to sag. You can replace them using a few ordinary tools.

1. Put on gloves. Turn the chair, sofa or bench upside down. Use a staple puller to remove staples securing a

lightweight fabric to the bottom of the seat. Remove staples from one side only. Fold the fabric up and out of the

way to expose the springs.

2. Use a screwdriver to pry small metal clips from staples holding them secure to the seat. The springs are hooked

through clips on both sides. Tap the screwdriver with a hammer to drive the tip of the screwdriver under the clip, and

then pry the clips off one at a time. Remove the springs by sliding the loose end of the spring out of the circular hook

on the clip. Remove all of the broken or bent staples using diagonal pliers.

3. Pry off the clips and springs from the other side the same way. Remove the springs from the seat. Remove the

clips from the springs.

4. Take one of the springs to an upholstery shop where you can purchase replacement springs of the same type and

length.

5. Screw the clips back onto the seat using a drill/driver and 3/4-inch screws. Use the original staple holes as pilot

holes for the new screws.

6. Hook one end of the new spring into the circular hole in the clip. Hook all of the springs on one side only, allowing

the other ends to hang down.

7. Grasp the spring with a gloved hand. Stretch and pull the spring toward your body. Hook the end of the spring

into the corresponding clip and release the tension on the spring. Stretch and hook each individual spring the same

way.

8. Stretch the lightweight fabric back in place over the springs. Use an upholstery staple gun with 1/4-inch, wide-

crown staples to secure the fabric back into place.

Tip:If you're having trouble stretching the springs, hook the jaw of a clamp on one of the spring coils, and hook

the other end onto the side of the seat. Tighten the clamp to stretch the spring and then hook it onto the

corresponding clip.

Warning

Steel springs may have sharp ends that can cut skin. Use caution when handling. Wear eye protection and

gloves.
