In its default state, the valve permits unrestricted flow from channel P to channel A, while simultaneously applying pressure via the bore to the piston area against the compression spring. The design includes a nozzle that applies pressure to the spring-loaded side of the control spool and guides hydraulic fluid flow until the desired reduced pressure is achieved.

The balance between channel A's pressure and the set value on the compression spring determines when the ball opens, signaling that the required reduced pressure has been reached.
