Forming carbon fiber parts, such as rotor blades, at high
temperatures and pressures involves a process called autoclave
curing.
- Prepreg lay-up: Toray 3K carbon fiber is usually used in the form
of prepreg (prepreg) board, which is a carbon fiber braided fabric
impregnated with a resin matrix. These prepreg plates are layered
into the desired shape of the blades according to specifications
for stiffness, aerodynamics and strength.
- Forming: The prepreg layer is placed into a mold designed for
multiple rotor blades. The mold can have the precise aerodynamic
shape required for optimal performance.
- Autoclave curing: The mold containing the prepreg is then placed in
an autoclave where it is subjected to high pressure and heat. The
pressure forces the resin into all the nooks and crannies of the
carbon fiber braid, ensuring full curing. The high temperature
activates the curing agent of the resin, causing it to harden and
bond the fibers together to form a strong, lightweight structure.
- Finishing: After curing, the blades may undergo additional
procedures such as dressing, polishing and coating to prevent UV
degradation, weathering or environmental damage. The final product
is lightweight but very strong and can withstand the pressures of
high speed flight and variable atmospheric conditions.
