CuNi8 NC012 C71500 Marine-Grade CuNi Alloy with Superior Corrosion Resistance

CuNi8 NC012 C71500 Copper-Nickel Alloy Wire is a highly versatile and corrosion-resistant alloy that contains 8% nickel and 92% copper, making it ideal for marine, chemical, and electrical applications. It offers a balance of moderate strength, good electrical and thermal conductivity, and outstanding resistance to seawater corrosion. This alloy is commonly used in seawater piping, heat exchangers, marine hardware, electrical components, and chemical processing equipment. While it may not offer the same electrical conductivity as pure copper or the strength of higher-performance alloys, CuNi8 remains an excellent choice for marine, offshore, and corrosive environment applications where durability and resistance to biofouling are essential.

Main physical properties:

Max continuous operating temperature ℃

250
Resistance temperature coefficient x 10-5/℃(20℃-600℃)<57
Thermovoltage to copper at 20℃ in μV/K-22
Thermal expansion coefficient ×10-6/K(20℃-400℃)17.5
Thermal conductance at 20℃ W/mK75
Specific heat capacity at 20℃ J/gK0.38

Some key features of CuNi-8 include:

  • Composition:

Copper (Cu): Approximately 92%, providing excellent thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, and ductility.

Nickel (Ni): Approximately 8%, which enhances the alloy’s corrosion resistance, strength, and overall durability, particularly in marine and offshore environments.

Iron (Fe): A small amount of iron in the composition contributes to improved strength and resistance to corrosion in certain environments.

  • Corrosion Resistance:

Marine and Seawater Resistance: The 8% nickel content significantly improves the alloy's seawater corrosion resistance, making it ideal for marine applications, including seawater piping, heat exchangers, condensers, and offshore oil rigs.

General Corrosion Resistance: CuNi8 also performs well in mild acidic, alkaline, and chemical environments, providing durable resistance to a range of corrosive substances encountered in chemical processing and industrial applications.

Biofouling Resistance: The alloy’s resistance to biofouling (marine organism buildup) is beneficial for seawater-cooled systems, ensuring efficient operation without performance degradation from marine life accumulation.

  • Mechanical Properties:

Moderate to High Strength: With its nickel content, CuNi8 offers higher strength compared to pure copper, making it suitable for marine and industrial applications that require moderate mechanical strength.

Fatigue and Wear Resistance: CuNi8 has good resistance to fatigue and wear, allowing it to withstand thermal cycling and mechanical stress in demanding environments like heat exchangers and marine structures.

Workability: The alloy retains good ductility, allowing it to be cold-worked and hot-worked into wires, tubes, rods, and sheets, which is crucial for its fabrication into various industrial components.

  • Electrical and Thermal Conductivity:

Good Electrical Conductivity: While the alloy's electrical conductivity is lower than pure copper, it still offers sufficient conductivity for electrical wiring, connectors, and other components where some electrical conductivity is required.

Excellent Thermal Conductivity: CuNi8 maintains high thermal conductivity, which makes it a reliable material for heat exchangers, cooling systems, and other applications that require efficient heat transfer.

  • Weldability and Fabrication:

Weldability: CuNi8 can be welded using conventional methods such as TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) and MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding. Care should be taken to avoid overheating during the process to prevent oxidation or material degradation.

Formability: CuNi8 is easy to form into different shapes, such as wires, tubes, rods, and sheets, and can be processed through standard manufacturing techniques without compromising its mechanical or corrosion-resistant properties.

Applications:

  • Marine and Offshore Applications: CuNi8’s corrosion resistance to seawater and its biofouling resistance make it ideal for marine applications such as seawater piping, desalination plants, heat exchangers, marine hardware, and offshore oil rigs.
  • Electrical Components: It is used in electrical cables, wires, connectors, and other electrical components that require moderate electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance.
  • Heat Exchangers and Cooling Systems: CuNi8 is commonly used in heat exchangers, cooling systems, and condensers, where high thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance are essential.
  • Chemical Processing Equipment: The alloy is suitable for industrial piping and chemical processing equipment exposed to mild acidic or alkaline environments.
