Monel K500/UNS N05500/2.4375 High-Strength Wire for Chemical Processing Environments

Monel K-500 is a high-strength, corrosion-resistant nickel-copper alloy that combines the properties of Monel 400 with the enhanced strength and hardness provided by aluminum and titanium. It is composed of approximately 63% nickel, 30% copper, and small amounts of aluminum and titanium. Monel K-500 is known for its exceptional strength, hardness, and resistance to stress corrosion cracking, making it ideal for applications in challenging environments.

This alloy exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in seawater, acids, alkalis, and other harsh conditions, similar to Monel 400, but with additional benefits of increased strength and wear resistance. Monel K-500 maintains good mechanical properties at both low and high temperatures, making it suitable for marine, aerospace, and chemical processing industries. It is non-magnetic, highly resistant to oxidation, and offers superior fatigue resistance.

Common applications of Monel K-500 include turbine blades, propeller shafts, valve components, fasteners, and other critical parts in the aerospace, marine, oil and gas, and chemical industries. Its ability to perform in high-stress, corrosive, and high-temperature environments makes Monel K-500 a preferred material for demanding industrial and engineering applications.

Some key features of Monel K-500 include:

  • Nickel-Copper Base: A solid solution strengthened nickel-copper alloy with excellent corrosion resistance.
  • Age-Hardenable: The addition of aluminum and titanium allows for precipitation hardening, significantly enhancing its strength and hardness.
  • Corrosion Resistance: A variety of environments, including seawater, acids, and alkalis.
  • High Strength: After aging, Monel K-500 exhibits much greater yield and tensile strengths compared to non-age-hardened Monel alloys.
  • Non-Magnetic: It is virtually non-magnetic, even at low temperatures, which is beneficial for applications where magnetic interference is a concern.
  • Temperature Resistance: It retains its mechanical properties from cryogenic temperatures up to about 480°C (900°F).
  • Marine Applications: Particularly suitable for marine environments due to its resistance to chloride ion corrosion and seawater corrosion.
  • Chemical Processing: Resistant to a wide range of chemicals, making it ideal for use in chemical processing equipment.
  • Oil and Gas: Its resistance to hydrogen sulfide and sour gas environments makes it suitable for oil and gas production applications.
  • Dimensional Stability: Monel K-500 has exceptionally good dimensional stability, important for high-precision devices such as gyros.
  • Low Thermal Expansion: It has a low coefficient of thermal expansion, which is beneficial for applications where maintaining tight tolerances is critical.
  • Weldability: Monel K-500 can be welded using standard welding procedures, although it is often necessary to anneal before aging to maintain its properties.

These features make Monel K-500 a versatile and high-performance alloy for demanding applications where both strength and corrosion resistance are required.
