Twin-screw extruder is the most common machine in the modified plastics industry, widely used in polymer processing industry and other production and processing fields; there are many types of twin-screw extruders, which can be divided into two categories: meshing type and non-meshing type. Meshing type twin-screw extruders can be divided into two categories: co-rotating and counter-rotating.

1. Differences in the working principle of co-rotating twin-screw extruders and single-screw extruders

The structure and function of co-rotating twin-screw extruders are very similar to those of single-screw extruders, but there are great differences in the working principle. Mainly manifested in the following aspects:

1) Forced conveying. The meshing co-rotating twin screws move in opposite directions at the meshing point. One screw pulls the material into the meshing gap, while the other screw pushes the material out of the gap. As a result, the material is transferred from one screw groove to the other screw groove, and the material is forced to be conveyed along the screw in an "∞" shape toward the head direction.

2) Homogenization and mixing. The gap between the co-rotating twin screws is very small at the meshing point, the speed direction of the screw ribs and the screw grooves is opposite, and the relative speed is large. Therefore, the meshing area has a very high shear speed and a large shear force, and the mixing effect is much better than that of single-screw extruders and counter-rotating twin screw extruders.

3) Self-cleaning. The co-rotating twin screw extruder has a very high shear speed because the speed direction of the screw ribs and the screw grooves in the meshing area is opposite and the relative speed is large. It can scrape off any accumulated material adhering to the screw and has a very good self-cleaning effect, so that the residence time of the material is very short and it is not easy to produce local degradation and deterioration.

4) Plasticization of materials. The size of the screw gap has a great influence on the plasticization quality of the material. The smaller the gap, the greater the shear force, but the amount of material passing through is reduced; the larger the gap, the more material passing through, but the shear force is reduced.

5) Compression of materials. There are many more ways to compress materials in co-rotating twin screw extruders, and the comprehensive effect is good.

6) Feeding method. The co-rotating twin-screw extruder requires uniform quantitative feeding and adopts a metered hungry feeding method.

7) Exhaust. Because it is hungry feeding, a large lead screw conveying element can be used to make the screw groove in an unfilled state and in a zero pressure state, so that a venting section can be set.
