A Vertical Multistage Line-Shaft Turbine Pump is a centrifugal pump
designed to move fluid from deep underground sources (like wells or
boreholes) or deep sumps.
Features
Vertical: Installed vertically, with a small footprint above
ground.
Multistage: Contains multiple impeller and diffuser (bowl) stages
stacked in series. Each stage increases the fluid pressure,
allowing the pump to achieve very high heads (pressures) from great
depths.
Line-Shaft: Power is transmitted from a motor located above ground
to the submerged pump bowls via a long, vertical rotating shaft
(the "line shaft").
Turbine Pump: Refers to the pump section's operating principle,
where impellers (like a turbine in reverse) and stationary
diffusers efficiently convert velocity into pressure.
This design contrasts with a Submersible Pump, where the motor is also submerged and attached directly to the pump intake.
How It Works
The above-ground motor rotates the line shaft. The shaft spins the
stack of impellers within the stationary bowls. Fluid is drawn in
through the intake bell and enters the first impeller. Each
subsequent stage further increases the fluid's pressure. The
high-pressure fluid is then forced upwards through the column pipe,
exits through the discharge head, and into the system pipeline.
Advantages
High Efficiency in Deep Settings: Optimized for high-head,
high-flow applications, especially from deep wells or sumps.
Ease of Maintenance & Service: The motor and discharge head are
easily accessible above ground. The pump bowl assembly can be
pulled out for inspection or repair without excavating the source.
Superior NPSH Characteristics: Because the first impeller is
submerged, the pump has a positive suction head, eliminating the
suction lift problems and cavitation risks common with horizontal
centrifugal pumps.
Robust and Reliable: Designed for continuous duty in industrial and
municipal applications.
Small Footprint: The vertical design requires minimal floor space
above ground.
Applications
This pump type is a workhorse in industries requiring reliable
extraction or lifting of large volumes of fluid from depth:
Deep Well Water Supply: Municipal water wells, industrial process water extraction.
Irrigation: Large-scale agricultural irrigation from deep aquifers.
Circulation & Transfer: Cooling water circulation in power plants, refineries, and chemical processing facilities.
Fire Protection: Used as reliable firewater pumps in systems requiring high pressure.
Dewatering: Mine dewatering, deep construction site sumps, and flood control.
Raw Water Intake: Pumping water from rivers, lakes, or reservoirs into treatment plants.
In summary, the Vertical Multistage Line-Shaft Turbine Pump is the solution for heavy-duty, high-head pumping applications where reliability, serviceability, and performance are critical.
