The BS3262 Standard refers to a British Standard specification for hot-applied thermoplastic road marking materials, not a general thermoplastic coating. It outlines requirements for materials used in road markings, such as those for center lines, edge lines, and pedestrian crossings, applied by screeding or spraying. The standard is divided into parts:
  • BS3262-1: Specifies constituent materials and mixtures, including binders (e.g., petroleum resin), pigments (e.g., titanium dioxide), aggregates, and glass beads (for reflectivity, typically 20% minimum content). Binder content is often at least 18%.
  • BS3262-2: Details performance requirements for type approval, focusing on durability, skid resistance, and reflectivity, especially for white and yellow markings. It excludes materials inset into roads.
  • BS3262-3: Covers application methods, ensuring proper adhesion and performance on road surfaces like asphalt or concrete.
Thermoplastic road markings are heated (typically 180–220°C) to a molten state for application, solidifying rapidly upon cooling to form a durable, weather-resistant layer. Key properties include:
  • Composition: Includes resins (e.g., C5 petroleum resin), glass beads (20–25% for retro-reflectivity), pigments (e.g., 12% titanium dioxide), and additives for stability and skid resistance.

Application of Thermoplastic Paint:


    1. Surface Prep:

    2. Heating:
      • Melt at 180–220°C in a pre-heater.
      • Avoid overheating (>230°C) to prevent degradation.
    3. Application Methods:
      • Screed: 2.5–3 mm for lines, arrows, text.
      • Spray: 1.5–2 mm for large areas.
      • Extrusion: 3–6 mm for profiled markings.
      • Manual: For small areas or symbols.
    4. Glass Beads:

      • Premixed: ≥20% for reflectivity (100 mcd/m²/lx for white).
    5. Thickness:
      • Flat: 1.5–3 mm.

    6. Curing:
