Trunnion Ball Valve Material WCB PN100 DN150 Used To Control Fluid Media
Ball Valve
A ball valve is a common valve type that controls the flow of media through the rotation of a sphere. The sphere has a through-hole. When the axis of the hole aligns with the pipeline axis, the valve is fully open, allowing the media to flow smoothly. When the sphere is rotated 90 degrees, with the axis of the hole perpendicular to the pipeline axis, the valve is fully closed, blocking the flow of media. It features a simple structure, excellent sealing performance, and rapid opening and closing. It is widely used in numerous industries, including the petroleum, chemical, power, and water supply and drainage, to control various types of fluid media.

How to choose the right valve for a specific application?
Media Characteristics
Media Type: Identify the media passing through the valve, whether
it is a gas (e.g., air, natural gas), a liquid (e.g., water, oil,
acid-base solutions), a slurry (e.g., ore slurry, mud), or solid
particles. For example, ball valves, butterfly valves, or gate
valves are typically used for natural gas pipelines, while knife
gate valves may be more suitable for slurry transmission.
Temperature and Pressure: Understand the operating temperature and
pressure range of the media. In high-temperature environments,
valve materials must exhibit good thermal stability and creep
resistance, such as high-temperature alloy steels. For
low-temperature environments, consider low-temperature toughness,
such as low-temperature stainless steels and copper alloys. For
high-pressure systems, valves require higher structural strength
and sealing performance, such as high-pressure gate valves and
high-pressure globe valves.
Corrosiveness: If the media is corrosive, choose valves made of
corrosion-resistant materials. For example, for transporting strong
acids and bases, fluorine-lined valves, which are lined with
corrosion-resistant materials such as polytetrafluoroethylene, can
be selected. For moderately corrosive media, stainless steel valves
are a common choice.
Flow Control Requirements
Flow Control Accuracy: If precise flow regulation is required, such
as controlling the feed rate of raw materials in chemical
production, control valves and needle valves should be considered.
They can precisely change the cross-sectional area of the fluid
channel, thereby achieving precise flow control.
Full-Open/Close Requirements: If the only requirement is to open or
close the medium, gate valves, ball valves, and butterfly valves
are commonly used. Gate valves offer excellent sealing performance
and are suitable for shutoff applications with strict sealing
requirements; ball valves open and close quickly and are easy to
operate; butterfly valves are compact and have high flow capacity,
making them suitable for rapid opening and closing of
large-diameter pipelines.
Installation and Maintenance Requirements
Installation Space: In applications with limited space, such as
piping systems on ships and high-rise buildings, compact valves
(such as butterfly valves and ball valves) are more advantageous.
However, in industrial plants with ample space, larger valves such
as gate valves can also be easily installed.
Maintenance Ease: Some valves are relatively simple to maintain,
such as ball valves, due to their simple structure and limited
internal parts, making them easy to inspect and replace in the
event of a fault. In contrast, some control valves have complex
structures, making maintenance more difficult and costly.
Control Methods
Manual control: Suitable for applications requiring less frequent
operation or a low degree of automation, such as manual gate valves
and ball valves in small water supply and drainage systems and
small industrial installations.
Electric control: Commonly used in systems requiring remote control
and a high degree of automation, such as large chemical plants and
urban water supply dispatching centers. Electric ball valves and
electric butterfly valves can be remotely opened and closed via the
control system, and their opening can also be adjusted.
Pneumatic control: Pneumatic butterfly valves and pneumatic ball
valves are often used in applications with a compressed air source
and requiring fast valve actuation, such as clean piping systems in
the food and pharmaceutical industries.
Hydraulic control: Suitable for high-pressure, large-diameter
valves requiring high actuation torque, such as large turbine inlet
valves in hydropower stations. Hydraulic control can provide
sufficient power to operate the valves.
Cost Factors
Purchase cost: Valves vary significantly in price depending on
their type, material, and specification. Generally speaking, gate
valves and butterfly valves have relatively low procurement costs,
while valves made of special materials (such as titanium alloys) or
with special functions (such as high-precision control valves) are
more expensive. Operating costs: These include valve energy
consumption (electric, pneumatic, and hydraulic valves consume
electricity, compressed air, and hydraulic oil during operation),
maintenance costs (such as replacement of seals and parts), and
more. For example, while electric valves may cost more to purchase
than manual valves, in large-scale automated systems, their high
operational efficiency and low labor costs over the long term may
result in lower overall operating costs.
In addition, when selecting valves, it's important to refer to relevant industry standards and specifications to ensure they meet the safety and environmental requirements of the intended use.
