General method of judging faults
When the engine is working, if there is an abnormal phenomenon, we
should conduct a thorough investigation, find out the fault
situation, analyze and judge carefully, and find out the location
and cause of the fault. This requires us to be good at using
relevant principles and structural knowledge, analyze and reason,
and find out the essence through the phenomenon. Generally, the
cause of the fault is judged according to the following principles:
1 When there is an abnormal phenomenon in the operation of the
engine, you can use "look, listen, touch, smell" and other
comprehensive methods to judge which part or system has a fault.
"Look" - observe the readings of each instrument, the exhaust smoke
color, and the changes in water, gas, and oil;
"Listen" - use a slender metal rod or a wooden handle screwdriver
as a "stethoscope" to touch the corresponding part of the engine
surface to "listen" to the sound emitted by the moving parts and
its changes. ;
"Touch" - check the working conditions of parts such as the valve
mechanism and the vibration of the engine with your fingers;
"Smell" - use your sense of smell to show whether there is any
abnormal smell in the engine.
2 When the engine suddenly fails or the cause of the failure has
been determined, and the failure will affect the normal operation
of the engine, it should be stopped and checked in time. For faults
that cannot be immediately identified, the engine can be operated
at low speed and no-load, and then observed and analyzed to find
out the cause to avoid a larger accident.
3 When it is judged to be a major fault or the engine suddenly
stops naturally, it should be disassembled and inspected and
maintained in time.
Correctly analyzing and judging the cause of engine failure is an
important and meticulous work. It should not be disassembled and
repaired randomly before the cause of the fault is clarified. This
will not only fail to eliminate the fault, but may also cause new
faults when reinstalling.
