What is an HDPE Geomembrane?

A HDPE Geomembrane is a very low-permeability synthetic membrane liner or barrier.

"HDPE" stands for High-Density Polyethylene, a plastic polymer known for its high strength-to-density ratio.

In simple terms, it's a giant, impermeable plastic sheet, typically 1.5 to 3.0 millimeters thick (60 to 100 mils),

used to contain liquids and gases.

through waste. HDPE geomembranes are the primary component used to prevent this leachate from

contaminating groundwater and soil. Here’s why HDPE is so well-suited:

Excellent Chemical Resistance: HDPE is highly resistant to a wide range of chemicals, acids,

and alkalis found in landfill leachate. It won't degrade easily when in contact with these harsh substances.

Very Low Permeability: Its dense molecular structure makes it virtually impermeable to fluids and vapors,

effectively creating a barrier that contains leachate and landfill gas (methane, CO₂).

High Durability and Strength: HDPE has high tensile, tear, and puncture resistance,

which is crucial during installation and when supporting the weight of overlying waste and drainage layers.

Cost-Effectiveness: Compared to other liner materials like clay or specialized polymers,

HDPE offers a superior balance of performance and cost for large-scale projects like landfills.

UV Resistance: Modern HDPE geomembranes are manufactured with carbon black (2-3%),

which provides excellent resistance to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, preventing degradation from sun exposure before being covered.

Proven Long-Term Performance: When manufactured and installed correctly,

HDPE liners have a demonstrated service life that can exceed hundreds of years under landfill conditions.
