heat treatment

2xxx, 6xxx and 7xxx series aluminum can all be heat treated. This helps increase the strength and hardness of the metal and is beneficial for certain applications. Other alloys 3xxx, 4xxx and 5xxx can only be cold worked to increase strength and hardness. Alloys can have different letter names (called temper names) added to determine what treatment has been applied. These names are:

F means it is in as-manufactured condition, or the material has not undergone any heat treatment.

H means that the material has undergone some work hardening, whether or not concurrent with heat treatment. The numbers after "H" indicate heat treatment type and hardness.

O means that the aluminum is annealed, which reduces strength and hardness. This seems like an odd choice - who would want a softer material? Annealing, however, yields a more processable, potentially tougher and more ductile material, which is advantageous for certain manufacturing methods.

The T indicates that the aluminum has been heat treated, and the number after the "T" indicates the details of the heat treatment process. For example, Al 6061-T6 is solution heat treated (held at 980°F, then quenched in water for rapid cooling) and then aged between 325 and 400°F.

There are many finishes that can be applied to aluminum, each with cosmetic and protective properties suitable for different applications.

There is no effect on the material after polishing. This finish requires less time and effort, but is usually insufficient for decorative parts and is best for prototypes that are only testing function and fit.

Sanding is the next step up from the machined surface. Pay more attention to the use of sharp tools and finishing passes to produce a smoother surface finish. It is also a more precise machining method and is often used to test parts. However, this process still leaves machine marks and is therefore not usually used in the final product.

Sandblasting creates a matte finish by spraying tiny glass beads on aluminum pieces. This will remove most (but not all) of the machining marks and give it a smooth but grainy look. The signature look and feel of some popular laptops comes from a sandblasted finish before anodizing.
