How does a Capacitive Touchscreen Work?


Capacitive touch screens are built with a thin layer of conductive material, such as copper or Indium Tin Oxide (ITO), printed onto the underside of the display's insulating outer layer. When a finger touches the screen, a small electrical charge is drawn to the point of contact, which effectively becomes a functioning capacitor. The resulting change in the electrostatic field is then measured to pinpoint where the contact took place.


Projected Capacitive Touchscreens

Projected Capacitive (PCap) touchscreens are used on the vast majority of smartphones and tablets. PCap screens consist of a layer of glass, a matrix of electrodes and a protective film. The matrix of electrodes creates a three dimensional electrostatic field that registers even the slightest change in electrical current. So, when a conductive object, such as your finger or a stylus, comes into contact with the matrix of electrodes, the electric field is changed slightly, and the screen registers your touch

Capacitive Touchscreen Advantages

Frequently used areas on a capacitive touchscreen do not typically start to break down and become unresponsive over time and with heavy use. This can occur if employees try to operate the device with something other than their finger or stylus, if they tap the glass too hard, or if a mobile device is dropped. This is not true of a resistive touchscreen, which in most cases stops working whenever the surface is damaged.

Because a capacitive touchscreen keeps working even if it suffers damage, there’s no need to interrupt store or restaurant operations in order to install a replacement. This minimizes customer frustration and lost sales.
