Vertical coal mill is a specialized equipment used to grind coal
into coal powder, which has a wide range of applications in various
industries such as power, cement, and chemical. Here is the
relevant introduction:
Structural composition
Grinding disc: located at the bottom of the mill, it is the main working
component for grinding coal. A wear-resistant lining plate is
usually installed on the grinding disc to improve its service life.
Grinding roller: Generally installed above the grinding disc, it applies pressure
through a hydraulic system to squeeze coal between the grinding
disc and the grinding roller for grinding. The number of grinding
rollers is usually 2-4, and their surfaces are also made of
wear-resistant materials to resist wear during the grinding
process.
Separators: located at the upper part of the mill, used to classify the ground
coal powder. It uses rotating blades or airflow to return coarse
powder that does not meet the particle size requirements to the
grinding disc for further grinding, while qualified fine powder is
discharged from the mill with the airflow.
Transmission device: including motor, reducer, etc., used to drive
the rotation of the grinding disc and provide power for the
grinding process.
Sealing device: prevents coal powder leakage and external air from entering the
mill, ensuring the normal operation of the mill and a clean working
environment.
Working principle:
The material enters from the feed port of the mill and falls onto
the rotating grinding disc. The grinding disc rotates under the
drive of the transmission device, generating centrifugal force that
moves the material towards the edge of the grinding disc. During
the movement, the material is gradually crushed and ground by the
rolling and grinding action of the grinding roller. At the same
time, the hot air introduced from the bottom of the mill blows up
the ground coal powder, forming a gas-solid two-phase flow. In the
rising process, the pulverized coal is graded through the
separator, and the qualified pulverized coal is discharged from the
mill with the airflow and enters the subsequent pulverized coal
collection system; Unqualified coarse powder is returned to the
grinding disc under the action of gravity for further grinding.

Advantage
Small footprint: Compared with traditional ball mills, vertical coal mills have a
more compact structure and can reduce the footprint by about 30%
-50%, effectively saving factory space and construction costs.
High grinding efficiency: Using the material bed grinding principle, the material is
squeezed and ground between the grinding disc and the grinding
roller, resulting in high energy utilization. The grinding
efficiency is about 30% -50% higher than that of a ball mill, which
can reduce electricity consumption.
Strong drying ability: It can use kiln exhaust gas or other hot air as a drying medium to
dry coal while grinding, and can process coal with high moisture
content. Generally, it can dry coal with moisture content of about
15% -20%, and specially designed mills can even process coal with
moisture content as high as 25% -30%.
Good product quality: Through precise classification by the separator, coal powder with
uniform particle size and large specific surface area can be
produced, which is beneficial for improving coal combustion
efficiency and reducing energy consumption.
Low operation and maintenance costs: The wear of grinding rollers and grinding discs is relatively
uniform, with a long service life, easy maintenance, short
downtime, and can effectively reduce maintenance costs and losses
caused by production interruptions.
Application Area
Power industry: used in thermal power plants to grind coal into powder for
efficient combustion in boilers, generating steam to drive steam
turbines for power generation.
Cement industry: In the cement production process, vertical coal mills are used to
grind coal and provide fuel for cement kilns to meet the heat
required for cement clinker calcination.
Chemical industry: Some chemical production processes require the use of coal powder
as raw material or fuel. Vertical coal mills can grind coal into
suitable particle sizes to meet the requirements of chemical
processes.
