A butterfly needle, also known as a scalp vein set or winged infusion set, is a device used to draw blood from a vein or deliver intravenous (IV) therapy to a vein. A butterfly needle consists of a very thin needle, two flexible “wings,” a flexible transparent tubing, and a connector.
Butterfly needles have advantages over straight needles when collecting blood or delivering IV fluid or medications. For instance, they allow for more precise placement, particularly in hard-to-access veins. There are cases in which other needles need to be used, though.
Butterfly needles are one of the most widely used types of needle by hospital staff. There are several reasons why this is the case. First, the
design of the butterfly needle allows for easy manipulation. Many healthcare workers find it easier to use a butterfly needle to draw blood than other devices. Second, because healthcare workers feel more comfortable with butterfly needles –– and because butterfly needles are available with smaller gauges –– they are considered a good option for drawing blood from patients with small or hard-to-access veins. Third, butterfly needles are less likely to cause[1] [2] nerve injury and similar complications given their shorter length relative to other needle types, according to this report.
In summation, butterfly needles are often favored by both healthcare workers and patients.

1. Please tighten the interface between the hose and the needle seat 180 degrees clockwise to avoid leakage of vacuum or blood during blood collection;
2. Select a thick and straight main vein and puncture the vein. After successful puncture, blood return can be seen;
3. Puncture the tube plug vertically into the rubber plug;
4. Take the collected blood sampling tube and shake it. The shaking method is 180 degrees for 5 to 8 times;
5. The last tube is collected to a distance of 0.5ml from the rated blood collection volume, loosen the pressure on the cuff, pull out the venipuncture needle, let the blood in the hose flow into the blood collection tube, and then pull out the tube and plug the puncture needle;
6. After collecting the blood, place the needle in the recycling bin.
