Adrenocorticotropic hormone testing can be used for the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of pituitary adrenal insufficiency or hypofunction.}

^{Adrenocorticotropic hormone is valuable in the differential diagnosis of adrenal insufficiency and hypersecretion. In primary adrenal insufficiency, elevated ACTH levels are typically present, whereas low levels of ACTH are often seen in adrenal insufficiency secondary to pituitary dysfunction. ACTH testing can also help identify the cause of cortisol hypersecretion in cushing syndrome. ACTH levels are characteristically low when cortisol hypersecretion is caused by adrenal cortical lesions or hyperplasia, and when ACTH is produced by ectopic pituitary glands When it is caused by excessive secretion of ACTH,}
