Generally, paperboard is thicker and stiffer than paper. However, the difference between paper and paperboard may not be a clear one, since, typically, the term ‘paper’ can be used to include both paper and paperboard. There are two parameters used by paper industry to characterize paper and paperboard, which are caliper or thickness and paper density or weight per unit area (Kirwan, 2013; Soroka, 2002).

Caliper can be measured in thousandths of an inch called ‘points’ (1 point = 0.001 in), in the inch/pound units, or in microns in metric units (Soroka, 2002). Generally, paperboard is a paper with thickness greater than 10 points or 0.25 mm. There are some exceptions in the industry depending on the applications since sometimes paper with 9-point thickness, such as corrugated medium layer, is referred to as paperboard (Twede, 2005).

Paper density can be defined using ‘grammage’ or g m−2 in metric system or ‘basis weight’ in inch/pound units (Soroka, 2002). Grammage is weight of paper in gram per unit area of 1 m2. According to the International Organization for Standardization, paperboard is a paper with grammage over 224 g m−2 (ISO, 2002). However, due to the improvement of manufacturing technique, paperboard can be manufactured using lighter weight materials and has lower grammage. Many producers now classify paperboard as paper with over 180–190 g m−2 (Kirwan, 2013).

The term ‘basis weight’ is defined differently for paper and paperboard. For paperboard, containerboard, and corrugated board, basis weight is the weight in pounds per 1000 sq. ft, but for paper, basis weight is the weight in pounds per 3000 sq. ft (Soroka, 2002; Twede, 2005).
