Pro-coagulation tubes, also known as clot activator tubes or serum tubes, are a type of blood collection tube that promotes blood clotting. These tubes do not contain anticoagulants or additives that inhibit coagulation. Instead, they are designed to allow blood to naturally clot after collection.

The function of pro-coagulation tubes is to obtain serum samples for various laboratory tests. When the blood is collected into a pro-coagulation tube, the tube's interior surface activates the coagulation process. As a result, the blood clots and forms a solid gel-like structure. After the blood has clotted, the tube is centrifuged to separate the serum from the clotted cells.

The separated serum can then be used for diagnostic tests that require the analysis of serum components such as enzymes, proteins, electrolytes, hormones, or other substances. Common tests performed on serum samples include liver function tests, kidney function tests, lipid profile, hormonal assays, and many others.

Pro-coagulation tubes are often distinguishable by their red or gold-colored stoppers or caps. The red-top tubes usually indicate the absence of additives, while the gold-top tubes may contain a gel separator to facilitate the separation of serum during centrifugation.

It's important to note that pro-coagulation tubes should be used specifically for tests that require serum samples. For tests that require plasma, anticoagulant-containing tubes should be used instead.
