Description

The inner and outer ring raceways are tapered sections, and the rollers are tapered so that both the tapered surface of the raceway and the axis of the roller (if projected) will intersect at a common point on the bearing spindle. This geometry keeps the movement of the cone coaxial, with no sliding between the raceway and the outside diameter of the roller.

This conical geometry forms a linear contact surface that allows greater load carrying than a spherical (ball) bearing with point contact. The geometry means that the tangential velocity of each roller surface is the same as the entire length of its raceway along the contact surface, and no differential scrubbing occurs.

The rollers are stabilized and restrained by flanges on the inner ring, their large ends sliding against the flanges, thus preventing ejection due to the "pumpkin seed effect" of the conical shape.

The larger the half Angle of these cones, the more axial force the bearing can withstand.

Tapered roller bearings can be divided into tapered components and outer rings. The non-separable cone assembly consists of an inner ring, a roller, and a cage that holds the rollers and is evenly spaced. The cup is just the outer ring. Internal clearance is established during installation through the axial position of the cone relative to the cup, although preload installation without clearance is common.


Structure

How to Install Tapered Roller Bearing?


A. Bearing installation must be carried out in a dry and clean environment. Before installation of tapered roller bearings, it is necessary to check the matching surface of the shaft and the housing, the end face of the shoulder, the groove and the connecting surface. All mating surfaces must be carefully cleaned and burrs removed. The unfinished surface of the casting must be cleared of residual sand.

B. Before installing bearings, lubricating oil or kerosene should be used to clean them. They can be used only after bearings are dry, and good lubrication should be ensured. Bearings are usually grease or some lubricating oil. When using grease, should use high quality grease, such as no impurities, anti-oxidation, rust and extreme pressure. The filling amount of grease is 30%-60% of the volume of bearing and bearing seat, which should not be excessive. Double row tapered roller bearings and pump shaft bearings with sealed structure are filled with grease, which can be used directly by users without cleaning.

C. When mounting bearings, equal pressure must be applied to the circumference of the end face of the ring to press the ring. Do not use boring tools directly impact bearing end face, so as not to damage the bearing. In the case of small interference, the end face of the bearing ring can be compressed with the sleeve at room temperature, the sleeve is struck with a hammer, and the sleeve is evenly pressed over the sleeve. If a large number of installation, you can use a hydraulic press. When pressing, ensure that the outer ring end face and the shoulder end face of the housing, the inner ring end face and the shaft shoulder end face are pressed tightly and no clearance is allowed.

D. When the interference is large, the method of oil bath heating or inductor heating bearing can be used to install, the heating temperature range is 80℃-100℃, the maximum cannot exceed 120℃. At the same time, the bearing should be tightened by nuts or other appropriate methods to prevent the bearing from shrinking in the width direction after cooling, resulting in a gap between the ring and the shaft shoulder. 5

E. Clearance adjustment should be carried out at the end of installation of single row tapered roller bearings. The clearance value should be determined according to different working conditions and interference size. If necessary, tests should be carried out to determine. The clearance of double row tapered roller bearings and water pump shaft coupling bearings has been adjusted before leaving the factory and need not be adjusted again during installation.


Universal Failure Modes

  • Contact fatigue (fatigue wear) failure. Contact fatigue failure is one of the most common failure modes of all kinds of tapered roller bearings, which is the failure caused by the repeated action of cyclic contact stress on the bearing surface. The contact fatigue spalling on the surface of tapered roller bearing is a process of fatigue crack initiation and propagation. The initial contact fatigue crack is first generated from the maximum orthogonal shear stress below the contact surface, and then extends to the surface to form pitting spalling or small flake spalling. The former is called pitting or pitting spalling. The latter is known as shallow spalling. If the initial crack is generated at the interface between the hardened layer and the heart, resulting in early peeling of the hardened layer, it is called peeling of the hardened layer.

2. Adhesion and abrasive wear failure. it is one of the most common failure modes of all kinds of bearing surfaces. The continuous loss of metal on the surface caused by the relative sliding friction between tapered roller bearing parts is called sliding friction. Continuous wear will change the size and shape of parts, increase the fit clearance of tapered roller bearing, deteriorate the working surface topography, thus losing the rotation accuracy, so that the bearing can not work normally. The sliding wear forms can be divided into abrasive wear, adhesive wear, corrosion wear, fretting wear, etc., among which the most common ones are abrasive wear and adhesive wear.
