Calculation method of flame spread index FSI:
Measure the curve of the smoke generation and flame propagation
rate of the sample, and then calculate the flame spread index (ESI)
of the sample. The calculation method is: If the total area under
the sample curve is AT<29.7m*in, then ESI=0.515AT
If FSI>29.7m*min. Then FSI=4900/(195-AT)
ASTME84 Standard Scope:
This 10-minute fire test response standard for comparing the
burning behavior of building material surfaces is applicable to
exposed surfaces such as walls and ceilings. The test is conducted
with the specimen in the ceiling position with the surface to be
evaluated facing downward and exposed to the ignition source. The
material, product, or assembly shall be capable of being mounted in
the test position during the test. The specimen shall be
self-supporting by its own structural mass, secured in place by
additional supports along the test surface, or secured from the
back.
ASTM E84 standard applicable products:
Building materials, wallpaper, insulation materials, panel
products, paints, adhesives, sealants and coatings, interior
decoration.
ASTI E84 fire rating classification:
ASTM E84 Class is 0-25 mesh smoke index not exceeding 450.
ASTM E84 Class B is 26-75 day smoke index not exceeding 450.
ASTM E84 Class C 76-200 day smoke index not exceeding 450.
ASTm E84 test method for surface burning characteristics of
building materials:
1.ATM E84 test is carried out by placing a 24-inch wide x 24-foot
long sample into Stan's tunnel, where the test is carried out by
using two burners that provide 89 energy. During the 10-minute
test, the sample is installed under a removable cover on the
ceiling and forced ventilation is provided so that air and
combustion products move in the tunnel and enter the
exhaust/scrubber system.
2. The fire spread index (RS1) is calculated based on the data
recorded by the window of the ventilation room, and the computer
software records the flame spread curve during the test (0
minutes). The flame spread curve is calculated based on the data
recorded by the photometer system. The photometer system consists
of a light source, a photoelectric tube and a special electronic
device. The light passes through the ventilation room, and the
computer software records the light obstruction when the light
passes through the beam path during the test. The smoke area under
the smoke curve is used to calculate the smoke generation index.
4: Flame propagation refers to the development of flames on the
surface of materials. It is related to the fire signal and the
combustible material to expand the fire. The flame propagation
performance is often tested by enzyme method and radiation plate
method. This ASTHE84: method is used to determine the flame
propagation rate of building materials (determination of field
concentration), according to ASTMB84.
The equipment used in the ASTIE84 tunnel method is a steel trough
lined with refractory bricks with a length of 7.62m and an open end
cross-section of 0.45m*0.30m, with windows on the side of the
trough.
