Planetary stranding machine are designed in 2 versions: Light duty (L/D), for cabling insulated conductors with low bobbin weight and; heavy duty (H/D), for stranding bare wire with high bobbin weight.

The cage of a planetary stranding machine can be set in one of 3 modes:
