AISI 416 is a free machining martensitic grade of stainless.

Free-cutting steels are characterized by excellent machinability and surface finish and have tight

and consistent tolerances.

This contributes to increased cutting speeds, reduced tool wear and shorter set-up times.

Parts can be fabricated in the soft condition then hardened by heat treating to increase strength and hardness.

The addition of sulfur increases the machinability over austenitic grades but alloy 416 sacrifices corrosion resistance.
