The Superiority of Cross-Linked Polyethylene Wire
XLPE consists of various positive electrical and mechanical
features, making it an ideal choice for internal wire insulation.
- Low Dielectric Loss: The wire has a good dielectric constant. This is particularly
useful for applications that do not have an earthing system. Using
XLPE wires reduces the possibilities of charging currents or
current leakage. Also, the dielectric loss from XLPE is two
decimals lower than wires insulated with PVC.
- Can Carry Large Currents: As a material, XLPE is designed to provide immense resistance to
thermal deformation. This also reduces the wire’s aging process,
thus ensuring a long service life. These attributes allow
cross-linked polyethylene wires to carry large currents in a range
of temperatures, from 90oC to 250oC.
- Protective Conducting Screens: Generally, XLPE wires are produced with extruded conducting
screens to protect the primary polyethylene insulation. The screens
are used to fill in any crevices between the wires, thus creating a
protective layer around the conductor. The result of this is an
immense reduction in the amount of flux and electrical stress
around the conductor.
- No Metallic Sheathing: Cross-linked polyethylene is resistant to moisture, weather
conditions, and thermal changes. This means that there is no
necessity for the wire to have metallic sheathing. Also, the
elimination of metal means that the wire will not suffer from
traditional problems like corrosion.
