Anodizing process:
Anodizing is an electrochemical process that transforms metal surfaces into decorative, durable, and corrosion-resistant anodizing layers. Aluminum is well suited for anodizing, although other non-ferrous metals, such as magnesium and titanium, can also be anodized.
The structure of the anodic oxide originates from the aluminum substrate and consists entirely of alumina. The alumina is not applied to the surface like paint or electroplating, but is fully integrated with the underlying aluminum substrate, so it does not shatter or flake. It has highly ordered porous structure and can be used for secondary processing such as coloring and sealing.
Anodizing is accomplished by immersing aluminum in an acidic electrolyte and passing current through the medium. The cathode is installed inside the anode oxidation tank. Aluminum acts as an anode, so oxygen ions are released from the electrolyte and combine with aluminum atoms on the surface of the anodized part. Therefore, anodizing is a highly controlled oxidation problem, enhanced by natural phenomena.
