Galfan is a type of steel that has a zinc-aluminum layer applied to it rather than the typical zinc layer that is applied to galvanized steel due to the higher corrosion resistance of the zinc-aluminum layer. Over the past 20 years, gabion products with a galfan coating have demonstrated increased performance in a variety of applications when compared to conventional galvanized steel.

Q5: How many years can Galfan coated es be used? How is the
estimated working life?
According to EN10223, Galfan(Zn90%Al10% alloy) coated, class A
gabion can last up to 120 years in low aggressive condition (dry
condition, like desert, sub-arctic areas), and Zn95%Al5% alloy,
class A can last more than 50 years in same condition. While in
very high aggressive condition, Galfan(Zn95%Al5% alloy) with PVC or
PA6 coating can last 120 years and Galfan(Zn90%Al10% alloy) can
last more than 120 years.
In EN10223, it also says: the working life of a product depends
upon its inherent durability and normal installation and
maintenance. A clear distinction has to be made between the assumed
economically reasonable working life for a product (also called:
design working life), which underlies the assessment of durability
in Technical Specifications, and the actual working life of a
product in a works. The latter depends on many factors beyond the
control of the producer, such as design, location of use
(exposure), installation, use and maintenance. The assumed working
life can thus not be interpreted as being a guarantee given by the producer.
